Welcome
NEWS

ggeSince September, we have been developing a new area of our work; with the launch of a second drama team with the specific aim of taking drama into schools and occasionally prisons.  The team is a joint project between “Oddments Theatre”and “Urban Warriors” (The Yeovil Community Church team.) Every Tuesday, eight of the young people have been learning some of the “Oddments sketches” and in November we started performing these at school assemblies locally. It’s been really exciting both to see the young people develop and to launch a completely new area of our work.  Saying that, it’s also been hard work, as they produce so much energy and it’s sometimes hard to get them to stay focussed!   In the group there are two people for whom English is their second language and they have both surpassed my expectations.

wshopThe main team team has had to take a back seat while we’ve been getting the new group rolling. Now its time we introduce some new material our repertoire. In October we had members of both teams at the first of a number ofmeeting training sessions which we plan to hold throughout the year. The first session was taken by Neil Plugmere who very kindly travelled from Portsmouth to give us the basic blocks of a number of dramas. The second will be taken by a member of “Riding Lights” .  It always amazes me how long it takes to get a drama from a script a finished product.

In August we updated the website, which now gives you a lot more detail about our work. Sadly it’s already out of date as we need to upload some detail about the schools team and there are a few problems to fix on it. The address is www.oddments-theatre.co.uk

Drama Schools Person Wanted

drama As you know I have been working for “Oddments” one day a week for the last 10 years and now that the works expanding there’s  simply to much to do in one day. I’ll therefore be increasing my hours to two days a week until we employ a team leader for the schools drama outreach programme to work for “Oddments” one day a week organising the schools work. Of course expansion causes its problems. While we’re doubling the size of our work we haven’t doubled our income. So I will be back to the job I don’t like: fund raising, and recruiting people to join “Friends of Oddments.” We have just launched a ‘Friends of Oddment’s scheme for churches and we delighted that our own church has generously decided to sponsor us annually. This is a real encouragement.

Sadly the book has made minimal progress which continues to be frustrating. It looks like we’ll will self publish the book which we recognise will cost about £7000. The good news is we’ve saved £1906.24.  Hopefully working two days a week we’ll make some progress on this long team project, (all one off gifts went towards this fund.)

anna I do want to say a big thank you to you all for your support  in making “Oddments Theatre” a success over the last 24 years. With your help we have worked with over 60 different organisations including forming at churches, prisons, schools, festivals and at Alpha suppers. Special thanks to Marion my wife for all the help and the endless little jobs she does for “Oddments”.

I thank God that he has been with us step by step. Please pray that we get our schools worker and that the funding for this comes in, I’m sure it will.

Many blessings to you all,

Barry Boyton.
On behalf of “Oddments.”
